OVCE collaboration with Rebecca Norton’s “The Green Grass, A Looking Glass, Whereon Their Traits are Found”.

Photobucket

Please join us this year at Forecastle for a special collaboration emphasizing the vision of OVCE!  This year, Louisville-born, Los Angeles-based artist Rebecca Norton presents “The Green Grass, A Looking Glass, Whereon Their Traits are Found”.  In order to demonstrate the solidarity of grassroots communities with regards to the environment, artists from Los Angeles and Louisville have teamed up with members of the non-profit organization Ohio Valley Creative Energy to produce an installation that considers two symptoms of strip mining: contaminated water and citizen discontent.  The collaborative project, functioning within OVCE’s vision for sustainable production, can only be realized through a joined community effort.  The multi-media production participates directly with materials that suggest both visually and conceptually our relation to landscape in continual metamorphosis.  The work will be exhibited at the Forecastle Festival on the Belvedere Plaza in Louisville, KY, July 10-12, 2009.  Stop by our table and say hello!

Lori Beck, began working with glass in 2002 while completing her BFA in drawing at the University of Louisville, and later continuing her studies in glass while simultaneously working towards a Masters degree in Critical and Curatorial Studies. Upon the realization that she would no longer have the luxury of working in a university-funded glass studio she began to think about using landfill gas as an alternative fuel to power studios, an idea heavily influenced by the development of the EnergyXChange in North Carolina. Lori’s original intention was to find a “cheap” way to fuel the studio, but instead this journey has sparked a passionate interest and devotion to issues of sustainability and furthermore, how these issues relate to art and community. The resulting outcome developed into Ohio Valley Creative Energy (OVCE), a nonprofit organization with a mission to educate the public about sustainability through the creation of art and the exploration of innovative design. The vision of this organization is to build the designed methane powered mutli-arts and education center. Beck currently works as the Program Director and glass artist for Louisville Glassworks, volunteer director of OVCE, and also, as a freelance curator.
